View Full Version : Kahn academy for Algebra?

Does anyone use Kahn Academy Algebra? How does the course compare to various homeschool curricula? I'm familiar with MUS, Fred, and Saxon, so any comparisons to those would be most helpful.

I've had a horrible time with Tim for his math. He's been using Fred for several years, but is behind and I really don't have the motivation to decipher it all myself in order to turn around and teach it to him. I've been looking at switching him to the Saxon books, but we did the placement tests (http://homeschoolwithsaxon.com/saxon_placement_tests.php), and they cram so much into it so early, that he'd have to go backwards and do the Algebra 1/2 book. He was 9th grade this year, so I REALLY don't want to go backwards! There was stuff on that test that *I* didn't recognize, and I aced math in school and have helped 2 previous kids through beginning algebra. I sat and went through the test with him, and much of it he knew, but Saxon used different terminology or differently worded questions than he's used to. In the long run, that fact will cause major frustration if we switch to Saxon, but it's not insurmountable. Partly, I don't want to fork out money for full multiple full curricula on the same subject.

I think you just missed the sale price, but Tablet Class Math offers a combo pack that allows access to Pre-Alg-Geometry. The Pre-Alg seemed a lot like the first half of Alg I though- so you might do OK with just Alg. I. PLATO education's offering usually allow access to more than one math level so the student can go back a review. CTC Math allows access to ALL math levels but from what I've been told doesn't necessarily cover everything for Algebra. I've not used Khan for anything other than to supplement (as you can see I have quite few programs to choose from day to day :eyes:).

We use Kahn to supplement as well. Not sure if it is designed to be a complete curriculum.
