I am so impressed with myself over this! Today I was brainstorming how to make a fun classification chart for pre-readers, and I decided to make tactile pockets. I bought fabric that feels and looks like fur for mammals and another fabric that is bright green and feels kinda scaley (sp?) for reptiles, amphibians, and fish. I plan on attaching feathers to a third pocket for birds.

I think my little preschool co-op class will get a huge kick out of their pocket charts.

Any child would love animal classification with a board like that. Mine is just plastic page protectors -which now seem so dull  .Great Idea

Oh, my goodness, ladies. I just made two charts, and they are adorable. I made three tactile pockets (I thought about making one with scales, but decided not to since there aren't that many fish cards for BFIAR). Then, I took a manila folder, cut it down to 11 inches tall, and hole punched it on the nonfolded side. Then, I cut the shorter flap in half (but left it attached at the fold). The bottom flap I stapled to the other side to make a storage pocket. I glued one pocket on top of the storage pocket, one pocket above the storage pocket, and the last pocket on the open flap. It probably sounds crazy, but it looks just adorable!!! Now it fits perfectly in the kids' three prong binders.
