View Full Version : Please Help Me Choose a Bag

For our upcoming trip to Europe, I need a bag that's anti-theft for the Metro in Paris and the Tube in London.
I like this one (http://www.travelsmith.com/jump.jsp?itemID=7&itemType=PRODUCT&path=1%2C2%2C292%2C2489&iProductID=7&sortBy=0#BVRRWidgetID), although it is quite pricey, I figure that I can use it for after the trip also. Not just for travel.
My problem is that I love the Citron color. My favorite.

http://image13.beso-images.com/resize?w=145&h=160&uid=797102086

My 2nd choice would be Tan, but I really, really prefer the Citron. One reviewer wrote that the Citron ran onto her clothes in the heat . Since we'll be there in the summer, as well as in very hot Israel ... I'm disappointed. I want a really nice bag at that price, and now I guess I need to settle for the tan?
WWYD?

My favorite bag here in the tropics is a Citron one and that one never runs. Have had no problems with it.
Thank you.

I think any bag that can strap across and you can wear in front of you will be anti-theft. Not sure of that helps, or not.

I was given a bag by High*way (http://www.highwaybuzz.com/bags.html) for the Holidays this year and love it. They are also a bit pricey but so far I really like this bag. My bag is black (its the one with the leathery trim) and I am kinda wishing I could get a summer version--anyway, a few of the bags come in pear--I think it would work for you. Check it out.

Me neither RJ. Prior to this bag I was carrying a fanny pac by the strap as if it was a shoulder bag. Even with this bag I still sometimes just stick my wallet and phone in my pocket and leave the bag in the car :)

My bag is the 2nd row/2nd one in--in black. I think Negin would like the last one in the top row in pear, don't you?

You should look at the Sherpani handbags :D

This (http://sherpani.com/sherpani-pivo.aspx) one or this (http://sherpani.com/sherpani-pica.aspx) one would work.

I have a cactus pica. It's awesome. The front flap covers all inside pocket{s} and it does a body crossover so I doubt anyone could get into it without you knowing it. I prefer them because they are all made from recycled products and the dyes/inks are made from natural stuff. I'm nerdy like that. :D

I like it! Yes, I know about the fanny pack. Remember we walked to Rita's with our matchy matchy fanny packs? I wonder if people thought we were a couple!:lol::lol:

I'm a big Vera Bradley fan. Vera's Hipster and Mini Hipster serve me well.

This is the one I used when I went to NYC last November:
http://www.verabradley.com/product/Hipster/1001054/defaultColor/Twirly+Birds+Navy/p/1001054.uts
This bag holds LOTS...The multiple interior & exterior pockets are :thumb: and they're easily accessible. Among other things, I had easy access to our fare cards, and cash/debit card.

Here's the one I use (same style, different pattern) often when I'm on the go:
http://www.verabradley.com/product/Mini-Hipster/154799/defaultColor/Viva+la+Vera/p/154799.uts

Here's my fave go-to...I use it ALL of the time, especially when on the field or at the gym watching my dc's sporting events...I LOVE being hands-free!!:
http://www.verabradley.com/product/Little-Hip-Bag/1001030/defaultColor/Hello+Dahlia/p/1001030.uts
It's small, but mighty! I can fit my sunglasses, ID, debit card, money, cell phone & gum/mints in it. I usually wear it over my shoulder/chest; but, I have worn it on my belt. :thumb:

Here's another option...See if this will work for you:
http://www.verabradley.com/product/Travel-Belt-Bag/1001229/defaultColor/Boysenberry/p/1001229.uts

Happy shopping! :)

negin - the bag i used in buenos aires (last year and this year) looks almost identical to the one you posted (except i think it's a bit smaller)
i was able to wear it in front, as molly suggested, and it worked great!
mine is a chocolate brown

my current purse at home (a different style) is that citron color
(my absolute favorite color)
and i LOVE it
it's actually wearing out a bit (i've used it awhile)
and i don't want to say goodbye to it yet
(i've received so many compliments on it)
it's never "run" on anything but, then again, it's dark and dreary here

not much help, but just had to comment

Thank you all sooo much.

I think any bag that can strap across and you can wear in front of you will be anti-theft. Not sure of that helps, or not.
Molly, well, I should have remembered that, having lived in NY and traveled in London so often. Thank you for the reminder.

I like it! Yes, I know about the fanny pack. Remember we walked to Rita's with our matchy matchy fanny packs? I wonder if people thought we were a couple!
Someday, Rachel Jane and Gitel, I want to go to Rita's with you both! We went there often during our East Coast trips.

Ladies, if you have the time and patience, please bear with me. Would so love your comments, thoughts, etc. on these bag choices.

MONEY BELT (http://www.corporatetravelsafety.com/catalog/thin-deluxe-travel-waist-stash-money-belt-p-1235.html)
Should I just stick with a money belt and not bother about buying a new bag?
I’m embarrassed to say this, but I’m a bit of a snob when it comes to myself. I never judge how others dress or look. I’m more critical with myself. I'm rather image-conscious. Will a belted wallet make me look bulky and fat at the waist? And what if I'm wearing a skirt or dress, which is probably unlikely, since I imagine that most of our times on the metro or Tube - I'll be wearing pants - nonetheless. Would a belt look silly?
If not, I love the practical aspect of a belt. I'm just not sure how it would look or feel on me.
I know that a belt may be very good for my dh. He carries his wallet in his front pocket, but a belt should be much more secure.

ENDLESS BAG CHOICES!!!
Shopping online has become a task! I tend to over-complicate things. As dh often tells me, "You don't say?"!

Since Molly so wisely reminded me that any bag that can I strap across and can wear in front of me will be anti-theft, I have been looking and driving myself bonkers with all the choices in cross body bags.

Now, here’s my dilemma. I’m 5’ 2” and cross body bags tend to hang low on the body. Very long straps (ones that are not adjustable especially) tend to look awkward on short people.
My ideal bag would be:
• Suitable for my short height
• Nice color – I’m big on color and love stand-out colors. I used to just stick with brown and cream bags. I’ve become more adventurous.
• Good size – at least fit in my wallet, maybe a camera or small camcorder, etc. In other words, some space would be nice
• Good reviews if possible

My absolute favorite bag at the moment (and probably my favorite bag ever) (not that I have a lot of bags),is one from QVC. Love it, love it, love it. So I went to QVC once again and came up with several options. Would really appreciate your thoughts/feedback/opinions. Any of these? Or a Vera Bradley one listed further down this post?

VERA BRADLEY (http://www.verabradley.com/product/Hipster/1001054/defaultColor/Twirly+Birds+Navy/p/1001054.uts) - thank you, Kendall. :)
I’m not usually a Vera Bradley fan. I love them on everyone else, but have always been a bit cautious and conservative to wear them myself – much to my dd’s chagrin. She is crazy about VB. It would absolutely make her day if I were to get a VB.
The strap is adjustable.
Totally overwhelmed by all the print choices.
Would a VB look silly with a print top ? Almost all of my tops are printed. I now very seldom wear T-shirts. I think a printed bag would just look cluttered.

ETA: Looking again at the fabulous links that Kendall gave. Maybe a VB money belt - the last one she linked? What do you ladies think? Would it look silly with a printed top???? It might not show, but VB just makes me happy. How could one not feel happy with those gorgeous colors and prints! :)

Well, if you're really looking for theft-safe bags, you may want to take a look at these: http://www.normthompson.com/jump.jsp?itemType=CATEGORY&itemID=1602&path=1%2C2%2C7%2C1596%2C1602
They're reinforced w/ something called slashguard mesh (so that someone can't slash the bottom or side of your purse & take the contents that way). It looks like they have some variety in colors, depending on the style.

Also, I've often heard Baggallini bags recommended for travel:
http://www.normthompson.com/jump.jsp?itemType=CATEGORY&itemID=1599&path=1%2C2%2C7%2C1596%2C1599

I don't have either of those brands, so I don't know what they're like in person.

I'd stay away from anything that might fade/run on my clothes. I wonder if that might end up being a problem w/ any of the brighly-colored leather bags, esp. if sweating or caught in the rain? (I guess if you're wearing patterened shirts that maybe any stains from a purse wouldn't show as much though, lol. ;))

I think I might look at fabric bags vs. leather because leather can feel heavier to carry; consider the fact that moms often end up w/ everything excess to carry, so having a fabric (super lightweight) purse might be a plus.

I'm not a dye expert, but I also think that getting a fabric or microfiber purse in a color will be safer than getting a leather one in color, from a possible fading/staining viewpoint.

I think if I were going & planning to get a new bag, I might get this one:
http://www.normthompson.com/jump.jsp?itemID=13441&itemType=PRODUCT&iProductID=13441 (or the medium size one)
I like the wider, flatter style (vs. a taller style) because:
* to me, it's easier to see the contents of your purse in one that's not so deep
* a shorter, wider style would fit against my body better because I'm kind of short (esp. if I were wearing it across my body)

At a minimum, I like to have space for passport, some papers, wallet (big enough that you have sections for at least 2 different currencies), glasses, camera, cellphone, & a small water bottle.

Don't know if that helps any or not, lol! I probably just added to all the confusion.

ETA: This is not really related to finding the right bag, but something I'll mention anyway. One thing I always take w/ me when traveling is a couple of ziplocs in my purse. If I end up getting caught in rain (or snow or an unexpected rafting trip or ...), I can put my camera & cellphone (or any electronic items) in the ziplocs inside my purse. Depending on the downpour, sometimes even my wallet &/or passport will go in a ziploc.

I'm wondering if I'll really need a slashguard strap.
In the city, and pretty much everywhere, I always carry the zipper facing me. I'm very, very cautious in city subways/undegrounds/metros/whatever you want to call them ;). I had a close experience when I was in my teens and all alone in London. Never again. Luckily, I outsmarted him. :)
I'm just wondering if a crossbody bag held in front of me with the zipper on my side is fine and safe. It's what I've always done. I just like to find one that looks very nice, not scream, "TRAVEL!" or "PRACTICAL!" etc. if you kwim ;). Some travel things are rather dull and drab ... sorry to sound so snobbish, ladies . But I'm tired of dull, drab, boring, etc. I'm into feminine, girly, nice colors, etc.

I'd stay away from anything that might fade/run on my clothes. I wonder if that might end up being a problem w/ any of the brighly-colored leather bags, esp. if sweating or caught in the rain?

My current favorite bag is leather and rather bright. You can't get hotter temperatures than the Caribbean and I have not had any staining problems. So I don't know if it was just that particular bag that I posted earlier or not.
Yes, fabric might be better in that they're lighter to carry. Dd wants me to get a fabric one.

I think if I were going & planning to get a new bag, I might get this one:

That bag is nice. Not my favorite, but it's still nice and practical. A good possibility. :)
I always love your bag tips - body proportion, etc. Your words are gold!
Thanks so much for all the tips especially the Ziploc reminder! Sometimes I forget how rainy Europe can be.

Large (http://www.normthompson.com/jump.jsp?itemID=13441&itemType=PRODUCT&iProductID=13441) ?

or

Medium (http://www.normthompson.com/jump.jsp?itemID=13440&itemType=PRODUCT&iProductID=13440) ?

Either way, I'll probably get taupe. :)

I've decided to be more realistic and practical in my outlook towards anti-theft. ;) :D
