What do we need to take?
What foods should we bring?

Does anyone already have a list so that I don't reinvent the wheel?

What kind of camping are you doing? Hiking camping or going to a campsite where you'll be in reach of the car?

Also, where ya going? We camped just off LBI one summer (before child) which is a completely different experience than camping say..at the Delaware Water Gap

The vehicle will be nearby and we are going to Dingman's Falls (DWG). We'll be hiking from camp. We haven't decided whether or not we are taking kayaks yet.

T and B have done lets of camping/Canoeing in that area--mostly they get out at Dingmans, they put in somewhere upriver near Port Jervis (I think) and camp on some Island over night. It is with the Boy Scouts.

You should bring the kayaks!

I assume it will be a weekend--correct? Where you will be camping do they have facilities? When are you going--May or June (or summer)?

To start (no matter when you go)
Tent (s)
Ground cloth (s)
Tarp (s)
sleeping bags
sleeping pads
Hiking boots, day packs etc.
Camping stove and fuel
lanterns/flashlights

We'll be going soon, here in April. I guess I had better call and find out about facilities and fire pits. DH made the arrangements so I am a little out of the loop.

If you have a cooler...
breakfast - yogurt, granola, fruit
lunch - sandwiches, wraps, chicken salad, plenty of fruit and raw veggies
dinner - a simple one pot meal, hotdogs, etc.

for backpacking
breakfast - fruit and granola/power bars or oatmeal if you have a camp stove
lunch - tuna packets, grahm crackers and pb, apple, orange
dinner - beans/rice and already cooked sausage (kielbasa or Aidele's; if you freeze the sausage before you leave and then pack it in the center of your sleeping bag, it will still be cold by dinner the first night)

I just found this website with dehydrated foods for backpacking; we haven't tried it yet http://www.backpackingchef.com/index.html

Search the FIAR boards. There's lots of threads regarding camping and food.

I modified the list somewhat for where you are going, the ages of your boys, etc. As for clothes, while I just modified shoes, I think the list is just advice--use your own judgement. I'm thinking shorts may be unlikely in the woods in NJ (ticks) especially in April, but maybe a pair for your camp site (maybe) do you really need sweats pants and pj's and pants?
