I am wondering about books related to countries in the southern hemisphere. My only compliant about FIAR is that when I look at our icons on the map, there is nothing on the bottom half. South America, Africa, South East Asia, Australia, the whole southern hemisphere is empty. Any ideas?

Try www.homeschoolshare.com They have lists of books based on their location. I used these lists to pick out picture books to read as we study the 7 continents.

There is the Pumpkin Runner in Vol. 4 that is set in Australia.

We have rowed several books based in Latin America (I am a Spanish teacher so I have made a point to focus on these countries with my kids)....Here are some good choices....

Gauchada
Abuela's Weave
On the Pampas
Tonight is Carnival

Also, there is a great series of books by Vicki Cobb called "Imagine Living here". They are books you wouldn't row, but could read to give your kids an idea of the different places. I love the illustrations in them. They are done by Barbara Lavallee (a fellow Alaskan:) )...actually I love her artwork so much that I have an entire bathroom in my house with her art in it!

Here is the list of books done by Vicki Cobb and Barbara Lavallee

This Place is Cold (Alaska)
This Place is Crowded (Japan)
This Place is Dry (Arizona's Sonoran Desert)
This Place is High (Andes Mountains of S. America)
This Place is Lonely (Australia)
This Place is Wet (Brazilian Rainforest)
This Place is Wild (East Africa)

I am glad someone brought this up. Dh grew up in Africa and we lived there three years. It is a continent we will definitely want to cover.
I'm sure there are books that can be rowed about almost any of the African countries/land areas/cultures. It wouldn't be too difficult to get recipes and at least one type of art/craft from each.
I already have a few ideas bouncing around!
