View Full Version : Delayed separation anxiety?

My 4 1/2 year old seems to be going through a phase of separation anxiety.
I can't leave his sight or he becomes hysterical. He never went through this as a 1 yr old... so it's kind of strange.

Today I was gone with my oldest dd all day,and now he is clinging to me and won't let go. He cried when I put him in his high chair an walked away for a minute- this is not his typical happy-go -lucky self.

He has down syndrome and autism, so generally he goes about his business not paying much attention to me (or other family members) but the past week he won't even let me sit without budging his way onto the chair to sit right next to me.
I had to hold him for and hour after supper tonight because he wouldn't let go of me, or he'd scream!

Nice to know he needs me,but I do hope this stage is over soon!!

Has anyone else noticed a delayed separation anxiety in kids with severe cognitive/physical delays?
